Sometimes at work a guy needs to look for bright spots in the day. Today that bright spot came early in the form of a beautiful sunrise. I wish I could tell you this photo was taken from my deck on a Saturday morning, but alas it was taken on a Wednesday morning from my school. The Lord has blessed me with this gorgeous sight this morning and He has once again reminded me of His wondrous creation.
On another note--- Hurricane Michael will be striking the Florida panhandle within the next few hours. It's a category 4 storm and is poised to inflict major damage. Please join me in praying for the folks in northwestern Florida.

24 years
On October 20th, 1993, my son, Michael was born. It was a happy occasion in its own right, but it was a little extra happy because I knew how important it was to my grandpa Meyer that the family name be carried on. Obviously a male Meyer child was the only way that could happen. When the doctor told me our new baby was a boy, I sobbed for all the usual happy reasons. However I also knew some of those tears were because my grandpa would be so happy to know the family name would live on for another generation.
The first few months of Michael's life were very special. He was the first great grandchild for my grandparents. Simply put, Michael was the golden boy. During the winter and spring of 1993-1994, my grandpa's health began to deteriorate. By the summer of 94 he was in and out of the hospital a lot. As summer ended and fall approached things got really bad for grandpa. In September, things were looking bleak, and grandpa told grandma, "I don't care how sick I am, I am GOING to little Michael's first birthday party". Well, grandpa didn't make it. Grandpa passed away on October 9th, 1994 just eleven days before Michael's first birthday. I was so sad that grandpa didn't live to see Michael turn 1, but also happy that he wouldn't be suffering anymore.
24 years ago today my grandpa Meyer died and I really miss him.

K Day
Lord willing, this will be K Day (Kavanaugh Day). If all the Senators vote the way they say they will, we will have a new Supreme Court justice by this evening. I hope and pray this smear campaign the democrats waged backfires on them.

10-4 good buddy!
I meant to post this yesterday, but forgot. The date yesterday was October 4th (10/4). Why is nobody calling this CB day? As in, 10-4 good buddy.
I haven't thought of Citizens Band (CB) radios in a long time. However, the recent death of Burt Reynolds of Smokey and the Bandit fame brought the use of these radios back to mind. Remember the 70's when anybody who owned a conversion van also had a CB radio? Remember when everybody and their brother was talking in CB lingo? What's your 20, meant where are you? A Smokey was a cop. A bear in the air was traffic law enforcement by plane or helicopter. Double nickel was the speed limit of 55MPH. Go Go juice was diesel fuel. And trucker songs were all the rage.
Now we have cell phones and texting. I sure do miss the old days.
Breaker breaker 1-9. This is Silence Runs Deep signing off. 10-4 good buddy. Over and out!

Yep!
This makes perfect sense. Just like it makes perfect sense why my dad was such a grumpy son of a gun when I was a kid. Yeah, I totally get it now. Sorry, Dad. I didn't understand you back then, but I do now.

Please Stand!
Much has been said about some NFL players kneeling for the national anthem. I have always said it is their 1st amendment right to do so, but I find it extremely disrespectful for them to do it on the field. You want to protest peacefully? That's fine. Do it on your own time and not at work. Can you imagine what would happen to a teacher who decided to stage a peaceful protest during school hours? I doubt we would get multi-million dollar endorsements from Nike. The photo below is very touching. Here's an able bodied man helping a disabled man stand for the national anthem. That act of kindness is cool enough. What makes it even better is knowing this is a New Orleans Saints fan in New York helping a Giants fan stand. Here is a disabled man doing everything within his limited capabilities to stand and have respect for our nation. Whereas down on the field some of the finest physical specimens (and most well paid athletes) in the world kneel. It's quite the contrast, don't ya think? It speaks volumes!

And so it begins...
Eleven months ago the voters in my school district approved funding for a new school. Yesterday, for the first time since the election, something has begun on the construction of the new building. The photos below show the beginning stages of the demolition of the old boiler room from the high school building that was razed in the mid 70's.
