I Love Air Conditioning!

The midwest is in the midst of a pretty good heat wave. Upper 90's and even triple digits have been around for more than a week. We are also having a drought and desperately need a good, long soaking rain. Don't get me wrong... I love summer and these high temperatures don't bother me a bit. However, I don't like when my lawn turns brown. Things are just too dry.

Last evening major storms rolled through and knocked out power to millions of people in the eastern half of the U.S. Three states are in a state of emergency No power means no AC. That's rough stuff. No joking here. This can turn into a real crisis. Thank the Lord we still have power and had no storm damage. I pray these folks get their power back on... very soon!

Incidentally, Tami and I often debate which is the greatest invention in the history of mankind. I quite often choose AC. Seriously.

2000 and counting...

She Missed Me!

While I was at work today, Jessi brought Sveta to our pool to swim. Here's what was reported to me... Sveta walked in the front door and headed straight for the back door toward the deck and pool (that's where I am often found).

Sveta: "I wanna see my Goppa!"

Tami: Oh Honey, he's not here.

Sveta: Where is he?

Tami: He's at work.

Sveta: I wanna see him.



Later as it was time to leave:

Jessi: Sveta, it's time to go home now.

Sveta: I wanna wait for Goppa.

Jessi: Nice try!

Oh how I wish I could have been here!

One More Week!

Next Thursday morning we will hop in the car and drive to Port Canaveral, Florida. Next Saturday we will board the Carnival Dream and cruise to the Caribbean. CAN"T WAIT!

Cruise Crews

A few days ago I posted some travel tips. One of those tips stated that you should be friendly to the crew on your cruise ship. You may take that to mean you should be nice, say please and thank you a lot and to not treat them like your personal servants. While those things are important, I'm talking about something a little different. I stated you should talk to them and ask questions about where they are from or their families. We have done this in the past and I really believe it made for a better experience. Here are a two instances of what I'm referring to:

Richard: On our second cruise (aboard the Carnival Freedom), we met Richard. He was a small, Asian man with a smile as wide as the ocean. Richard worked on the deck collecting dirty dishes and delivering something if you ordered it. Here in the States he'd be considered a glorified busboy. Through numerous conversations we learned he was from the Philippines, was on this ship for 8 months (meaning he wouldn't see his family at all), he had a wife and children (it's important to note he literally lit up when he got to talk about his family) and was working on the ship in order to make money to send his daughter to school. Further responses to our questions revealed the public schools in the Philippines were horrible and expensive private schools were the only way to get a decent education for your children. Our hearts melted and we liked him immediately. Throughout the cruise we purposely looked for Richard so we could interact with him some more. We got to chat with him a few minutes almost every day. At the end of the cruise we sought out Richard in order to say goodbye and to give him a cash gift. I'm not telling you this to brag or to publicize our generosity. I'm telling you this to let you know that a small sum of cash could make a world of difference to a man like Richard. That was in 2007 and we still pray for him. We have no idea where he is or what became of him. I do pray Richard's daughter is getting the education he dreamed for her. My only regret is not getting Richard's address. I would have liked corresponding with him or the opportunity to send him more money. I am praying that by some miracle Richard will be on our upcoming cruise. It's about a million to one shot, but God can do it if it's His will. Either way, of all the fun we had on our first cruise, meeting Richard was one of the highest highlights of the whole vacation. Graham: On our third cruise (June 2011), we met Graham. He was from India. Graham was the assistant waiter at dinner. That meant he was responsible for bringing the bread, refilling drinks and taking care of the small stuff the head waiter couldn't be bothered with. Graham was quite possibly the nicest, most pleasant man I have ever met. You'd never have guessed he was away from his home for months on end or was working at a grueling job. We didn't have as much opportunity to talk with Graham. He was busy and couldn't afford the time to stop and talk. However, in the short chats we did have, we learned Graham had a serious girlfriend and had been away from her for many months. He told us when his contract was finished, he was going to go home and propose to his girlfriend. Of course we all cheered for him :-) Like Richard before him, Graham lit up when he got to talk about the girl he was in love with. I pray for Graham too. I wonder if he's married yet.

To conclude--- getting to know these people, if only for a brief moment in time can be very rewarding. Going on vacation is great, but remember to think about others too. You have no idea what your prayers for them will do.

Swim Party!

We had a little swimming party today. My mom and my good friend, Janie came over for a cookout and dip in the pool. Jessi and Sveta joined the party too. Sveta has grown into quite the little fish in the pool. She has been taking swimming lessons and now puts her head all the way under the water. If you'll remember, exactly one month ago Sveta swam in our pool for the first time and wanted no part of getting her face wet. Now we can't keep her from going under... she loves it! This precious little girl continues to amaze me at every turn. What a great day we all had!

You can call me weird





We are leaving for vacation in ten short days. Obviously we are getting very excited. I think everybody gets excited about their vacation as it draws near, but here's the part where you might call me weird. I enjoy the planning and preparation for the vacation almost as much as the trip itself.... ALMOST.

About a month before we leave we set up a card table in the living room. It's affectionately known as The Cruise Table. The cruise table is a collecting spot for all the little knick knacks we need for our trip. Throughout the month as we think of things to take, we put them on the table. Trip-Tic, fanny packs, batteries, medicines, sunscreen, lanyards, toiletries, alarm clock, passports, boarding passes etc... We also compile a master list. Turn off AC, Turn off water, stop mail, take this, take that. Don't forget this. Definitely don't forget that. You get the idea. I'm kind of obsessive when it's comes to planning and details. I DO NOT like surprises and I've been known to get my briefs in a bunch when my plans are disrupted. I absolutely cannot fly by the seat of pants or go with the flow. I'm not quite as bad as Clark W. Griswold in the Vacation movies, but you might say I'm "Clark-ish".

I also enjoy travel tips. This is another area where you are likely to think I'm some kind of weirdo. Here are a few (Mostly cruise related):

1) Have a pre-cruise meeting shortly before departure. Why? To hash out details of course. No surprises, remember? Besides, it's an excellent excuse to get together with everyone going and talk about all the fun times that are close at hand. Hawaiian shirts, drinks with umbrellas, calypso music and tropical decorations really add to the party atmosphere.

2) Plan, plan, plan and then plan some more. It sounds like a lot of work (and it is), but it's well worth it and complications are rare because of it.

3) Take an over-the-door shoe holder. it's sounds strange, but bear with me. Cabins on cruise ships are tiny and cramped. The shoe holder GREATLY reduces clutter. The little pockets hold all those small items that could easily be lost. Batteries, sunglasses, sunscreen, Sail & Sign card, camera, lanyards, pens, and anything else small. These items are easy to see and readily accessible when you want them. No hunting around. This is by far my #1 travel tip. It's awesome!

4)If it is financially feasible (and if your kids are old enough and trustworthy enough), get separate rooms. Four people in a cruise ship cabin is too tight and the privacy is an added bonus. And with no kids in the cabin it stays a lot cleaner. Are you getting the idea I like my cabin neat and tidy?

5) Don't buy anything while the ship is still docked in the U.S. If you do, you'll have to pay U.S. taxes. Wait until you're in international waters to avoid paying extra.

6) Be friendly to the crew. These are human beings with lives of their own and families of their own. They are not slaves or servants. Treat them with dignity and respect. You'll likely receive better and more friendly service. Talk to them. Ask them something about themselves or their home country. These people are away from home for months at a time. They already think americans are fat, selfish, luxury seeking people. Don't reinforce their views. In that same vein, if you make a connection with a particular crew member, consider giving them an extra cash tip. $20-$30 bucks may not seem like much to you, but to these people it goes a long way.

7) Be patient. Cruise ships carry nearly 4,000 passengers and 1,300 crew. You paid a lot of money for your vacation, but so did everybody else. Remember you are not the only passenger on the ship.

8) Be adventurous at dinner! Take the opportunity to order something you wouldn't normally order. You might like it! If you don't, simply send it away and order something else. You can't do THAT in a regular restaurant.

9) Take time to rest. All that sun and fun can take a toll on you. Relax, take a snooze and don't let yourself get cranky... you are on vacation for Goodness sake!

10) Be careful with your Sail & Sign card. It's easy to rack up a huge bill when everything is just a card swipe away. Check your tab every night (On your cabin TV). It's a good way to limit your spending and to check for mistakes.

11) If you really want to save money... stay out of the casino and limit your alcohol. I'm not saying you can't have a drink or two. Just understand it's easy to get caught up in the party atmosphere... and believe me, servers are constantly walking around with trays of brightly colored froo-froo drinks. Don't suffer buyer's remorse on vacation. It's a real downer.

12) If you are traveling with friends or family... Do whatever you want. Do not be pressured into doing something you don't want to do just because everybody else is doing it. Again, it's YOUR vacation.

13) It's a big ship. If you need a break from people, find a place away from all the action. Lots of people do this.

14) PACK LIGHT! Tami and I have been on three cruises and we have waaaaaay overpacked every time. This time we have vowed to fix that problem.

15) pack your bathing suit in your carry on bag. Sometimes you don't get your luggage until the evening of the first day.

16) Relax!

17) Do something nice for someone else. It's your vacation, but it's not always about you.

A strong back...

I continued my duties today as a quality control specialist and/or bottle inspector. However, at lunch time I was moved to a different area of the plant to perform a whole different type of job. This job required somebody with a strong back and a weak mind. I guess yours truly fit the bill. I was part of a team of men loading 40 lb. boxes of liquor from a conveyor belt onto pallets. Five and a half hours later the 5:00 whistle blew and it was time for the weekend. I was pretty tired and a little sore, but I put in an honest days work for an honest days pay. As my Father-in-Law likes to say, I was out diggin' taters. Just another way to earn a few extra bucks. Whatever it takes.

Official Bottle Inspector

I started my summer job today. My assignment is to inspect bottles as they whiz down the assembly line. I look for defects in the foil cover over the cap and look for bottles that did not fill properly. When spotted, those bottles are removed from the line to be fixed. I guess you can call me an official bottle inspector or a quality control specialist.

Strike Three?

The leader of our Bible study group spoke to Mr. Griffin's son. Apparently Mr. Griffin's health is beginning to deteriorate and his memory is beginning to slip too. Mr. Griffin's son also indicated that he doubted his father would be doing any more of these appearances (he'll be 96 in a few weeks). That means Tami's special dinner party may very well be the last public appearance he ever did. What a tremendous honor it was to welcome this hero into our home.

Strike Two!

You all may remember a few weeks back Tami planned a very special dinner with a very special guest. Major Tom Griffin of Dolittle's Raiders fame came and spoke to the men of my family. You may also remember that work duties prevented me from being able to participate in this wonderful event. Fast forward to this week... my men's Bible study group arranged to have Major Griffin come and speak to us. The event was scheduled for tonight, but unfortunately Mr. Griffin had to cancel (he had a setback). He's 95 years old... it's completely understandable. I was really looking forward to seeing Major Griffin, but was disappointed again. Strike two!

It's not just fun and games

Some time back I stated the three month vacation for teachers is a myth. We don't get out until mid-June and we go back to school in early August. I have to go in to school and do some curriculum writing this summer and I also have some mandatory online course work to complete. Those thing cut into my summer vacation time. I have also decided to take on a part-time summer job (obviously this is my choice and I have no cause to complain about it cutting into my vacation time). I'm going to be doing some manual labor at the local distillery where my brother-in-law, Dale is a manager. He's the one getting me the job. Don't worry, I'll be working around liquor, but I won't be drinking it. So you see folks, summer vacation for teachers is very nice, but it's not all fun and games. Three months off? Not even close!

The BEST Fathers Day... EVER!

Happy Fathers Day to all you guys out there. I have always felt there is no greater honor than being a father. This becomes more and more evident with each passing year. This year I also became a grandpa and Fathers Day went to a completely new level.

Children are a blessing from the Lord and this is something I take very seriously...

Psalm 127:3-4 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them.

Proverbs 1:8, 17:6, 22:6- Hear, my son, your father's instruction and forsake not your mother's teaching. ---- Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers. ---- Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

3 John 1:4- I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

Fathers Day always brings a flood of mixed emotions for me. Joy, sadness, regret, gratitude etc... Joy because of my own three children and my new granddaughter. Sadness because I always think of my own dad on this day. I still miss him even though he's been gone for nearly 22 years. Regret because my dad never got to see me succeed in my professional and personal life. Regret because he never got to see Michael and Abby. He got to meet Jessi, but he was too sick to fully enjoy her. Gratitude because God has blessed me beyond measure with my family.

Speaking of my own family... I received today the only Fathers Day gift I wanted. All three of my children, my wife, my son-in-law and my granddaughter all together for a cookout and swimming party. The icing on the proverbial cake was having Terri and Dale and my in-laws here too. We had an absolute blast on the deck and in the pool. It was the best Fathers Day ever... bar none!

Finally, thank you to my heavenly Father. He has been loving, patient, gracious, merciful and kind. The perfect Father for a sinner like me.

Chillin' by the pool

What a great day! We had nowhere to be and nothing to do. The weather was sunny and hot, hot, hot! It was the perfect day to spend relaxing by the pool. And that is EXACTLY what we did. We sat out and worked on our tans. We did crossword puzzles. We chatted about our upcoming vacation and of course swam. The water was a delightful 81 degrees. Later in the evening Terri and Dale came over to enjoy the pool as well. After a dip we decided to order mexican food. It was Dale's treat and we enjoyed chimichangas and listened to the Reds win their fifth game in a row. What a fun time we had!

College Bound!




Michael had his orientation at NKU this week. It was a mandatory over-nighter. He did not particularly enjoy this orientation itself. He said it was a lot of silly ice breaker games. There were presentations on the dangers of underage drinking and drug use. The incoming freshmen were strongly encouraged to get involved in campus life. He chose his classes and now has a schedule typical of any college freshman. One interesting note: to fulfill his foreign language requirement, he chose to take elementary Russian. Too bad Sveta only speaks English now (her Russian is completely gone... AMAZING!)

Michael is very excited about college. I pray this excitement lasts. He was never a very enthusiastic high school student. However, college is very different from high school. I have every reason to believe he is going to enjoy college. Tami and I met at NKU, but this is NOT the same school we attended more than 20 years ago. The enrollment has tripled. There are buildings that didn't exist back then. There are all sorts of differences. Hopefully it still has that small school feel that I liked so much.

He did touch base with the Christian organization on campus (BCM). Not sure if that stands for Baptist Christian Ministries or Baptist Campus Ministries. He also found out there are a few kids from our church and a few from his former Christian elementary school going to NKU as well. It's nice knowing he won't be completely alone. One of those kids from our church lives on campus and offered to let Michael stay in his dorm if there's ever a bad snow storm.

A note for the future: Michael is thinking about living on campus. It's too late for this year, although there is a waiting list in case vacancies open up. If not this year, it's a possibility for next year. He's never home anyway... things wouldn't be much different if he lived on campus. I do know one thing though... if he moves into a dorm, his laundry will not magically get washed, dried and folded like it does here at home. I can't wait to see how that works out for him.

Empty Nest Quandary

Tami and I have found ourselves with unexpected time alone lately. Michael had his two day college orientation and works almost every day. Abby has been hanging out with friends (Kings Island etc...). We're not exactly sure what to do with this time. We sit around and ask each other what to do and the the typical reply is, "I dunno". We consider going to a movie and quickly realize there is absolutely nothing worth watching. At least nothing that warrants spending nearly $20 for two tickets. We love going out to eat, but that gets real expensive, real fast. We don't have disposable income to be going out to restaurants all the time. Their prices are outrageous anymore! Sitting around the house or pool relaxing is nice, but there's only so much of that you can do. I mean, crossword puzzles are fun, but not for hours on end. We also love to take rides in the car. We especially like visiting places we've never been. But with the price of gas, it's difficult to justify spending that kind of cash for a ride in the car. We're not big fans of the Omnimax Theater or Museum Center (been there, done that). Going to visit Sveta is always a tempting option, but the Mortons have lives of their own (busy, busy lives) and impromptu visits aren't possible very often. We could go to the library and get some books. We both love to read, but again, for hours on end, it can get a bit old. We could go to Newport on the levee and walk on the Purple People Bridge. But that's not much fun in the heat of the day and again, that would lead to a restaurant and spending more money.

Do you see the quandary? We find ourselves with short stints as empty nesters. Yet we don't have a ton of money to keep ourselves constantly entertained. Please don't get me wrong though. Somehow we always end up having a great time together and we don't have to break the bank to do it. Tami is still my best friend and there's nobody I would rather spend my time with. I am constantly reminded how and why I fell in love with her and those feelings are only stronger today. However, when we do have these times alone, there is one topic that always comes up... the kids. We talk about the kids all the time. They are our favorite subject. And speaking of the kids, Michael is very excited about college and Abby is happy not to be a freshman anymore. Jessi is an incredible mother to my sweet little Sveta. But these are topics for blog posts another day.

Daddy Date!

I have previously posted on this blog the importance of dating your spouse. You date one another leading up to your marriage. Why stop after you're married? Don't let jobs, kids or the busy-ness of life get in the way. Tami and I went on a date last night and really enjoyed being with each other. But that's not what this blog post is about. The subject line says "Daddy Date". Have you ever thought of dating your kids? I know it sounds strange, but it just means taking your kids out individually and spending time one on one. It may sound a little weird for a father to date his son, so we just call it "Guy Time" or something similar. But in the case of girls, I call it a Daddy Date.

Tomorrow I will be taking Abby on a long overdue Daddy Date. She wants to eat at Chipotle (no problem there!). She wants me to take her driving (she gets her learner's permit next month). She wants to go shopping (this one is a bit of a challenge for this Daddy, but we'll go... it's her day). We may play a round of miniature golf (weather permitting). And we'll probably end the date with ice cream (I think it's a state law that all Daddy Dates must end with ice cream).

I'm looking forward to spending this special day with Abby. She always eats up the attention she gets. She'll be 15 next month and I'm not sure how many more Daddy Dates she'll let me take her on. It will be a sad day when she's too cool or too grown up to hang out with her Daddy. Until that time, I'll take as many as I can get!

Summer Begins!

Today is the first day of my summer vacation. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit pumped up.

Today was busy. We hosted our fourth party in three weeks. Tomorrow is busy with church and all, but Monday the real relaxation begins. I am eager to get up each morning and enjoy a cup of coffee while reading my Bible. I am also eager to start some projects around the house and in the yard. We will spend most days lounging around the pool, drinking iced tea and working crossword puzzles. We will also be starting preparations for our vacation next month.

Summer is here and I love it!

I lost my pants!

Get your minds out of the gutter, people. It's not what you think.

On the last day of school the teachers take the 3rd-6th graders to the community pool for a swimming party. It's a really nice way to end the school year and is an incentive the kids work for all the way up until the last day. We had a successful pool party today and we were dismissing the students to go home for the summer. Just as I was leaving a female teacher asked me to go into the boys locker room to check on a special needs kid. I walked in and found him standing in nothing but his underwear. I asked him if he was okay and he answered with words no teacher ever wants to hear. "No, I'm not okay. I lost my pants". Apparently he had changed into his swimming trunks and had not properly put away his street clothes. After a short search of the changing room, we located the pants in question. I could have handled, "I lost my towel" or "I lost my goggles". Hearing this boy say he lost his pants was the capper to a very challenging school year. This boy lost his pants. I nearly lost my sanity.

Penultimate

Penultimate has become one of my favorite words. It means second (or next) to last. Tomorrow is my penultimate day of school. In other words tomorrow is the second to last day of school! After Friday I am on vacation!

For teachers, this time of year is difficult. The last week of school is more about survival skills and less about actual education. Don't get me wrong. Teaching goes on until the last possible minute, but there are adaptations that have to be made as well. Kids are not dumb. They know things are winding down. They know teachers stop taking grades and don't want a bunch of papers to grade at the last minute. Kids sense the teachers are done and it's kind of a dance that we do. How can we seize those teachable moments while the kids know things are also coming to a close? In the end it all works out.

The Butterhead

In the post about Michael's graduation, I referred to him as the Butterhead. This nickname has absolutely nothing to do with butter or his actual head. Honestly, the name is a derivative of "Buddy". When he was tiny I declared he was my little buddy. Saying the word Buddy in baby talk often came out like boody or buddah. After hearing all these different sounding words that were in some way a form of Buddy, I finally landed on "buttah", which sounded a lot like the word butter to me. So it didn't take long for my little buddy to become the Butterhead. Most days we just refer to him as "The Butter". What time does The Butter work today? How was school today, Butter? Where's The Butter? Hey, Butter! Come over here for a minute. The Butter needs to take out the trash. Etc... Etc... Etc...

We love you, Butterhead!

A Nice Zebra




Tami and I were marveling at how much "Life" Sveta has experienced in her four months since arriving from Russia. She has been swimming. She's been to a ceramics shop. She's helped her mama cook. She's been fishing. She's stayed in a hotel. She's ridden a bike. She's eaten at many restaurants. She's been to the toy store. She's been tucked in every night. And I'm sure there are countless things I don't even know about. Recently she added a trip to the Cincinnati Zoo to her list of firsts since becoming a Morton.

Aside from seeing a gazillion animals, Sveta also got to ride the train and got her face painted like a zebra (see photo). I thought she looked a little scary, but I didn't tell her that. However some of the other kids feigned fear and she reassured them she was a NICE zebra. Sveta had a wonderful time at the zoo and was completely tuckered out by days end. What a thrill it was to see her looking with wonder at many of God's creatures.

The day was a bit rainy, but it didn't dampen anyone's spirits by any means. Personally, I've never cared for the zoo (not as a child or an adult). Honestly the smells kind of gross me out. But it didn't stop me from watching Sveta having a good time. I'm plum crazy about that little stinker.

Michael Graduated





Michael graduated today. We are all glad to have the ceremony behind us. The ceremony itself was fine, but the number of people they had crammed on the gym bleachers probably violated the fire code. To say we were packed in like sardines would be a tremendous understatement. You could not move. I have to give the school officials credit though. There were around 330 graduates and they moved the ceremony as quickly as they could. One hour and fifteen minutes was long, but not nearly as long as we were predicting. Tami and I estimated there were 2500 people in that gym counting the graduating seniors.The school really should look into a larger venue.

On bit of a different note... Today I was reminded that many people have no idea how to behave in public. The number of people who were talking and carrying on conversations during the ceremony was unbelievable. I also learned that a lot of people didn't feel the need to shower prior to the ceremony. C'mon people! Give us a break please! I have never liked crowds (and will do almost anything to avoid one). As I get older my dislike for crowds only gets stronger. However, sometimes crowds are unavoidable. I guess it wouldn't be so bad if people exhibited some common courtesy and reacquainted themselves with a bar of soap.

All in all it was a good day. Watching Michael accept his diploma was emotional for me. He's now officially a college student. Congratulations, Butterhead! (If you don't know about Michael's nickname, it will be a good topic for a future blog post)

I previously mentioned we had his party yesterday. After a long day and night Saturday and the commencement ceremony today... Tami and I were completely worn out. We came home Sunday evening and zonked out. I don't often take naps, but it sure felt good to take one today. Now I'm well rested and ready to face my last week of school.

Graduation Eve

We had Michael's graduation party today. A good time was had by all. It was too cool to swim. We grilled brats, metts and dogs and had enough food to feed an army. As Michael was opening his gifts, people were telling funny stories about him (kind of like a roast). We even did something we had never done before... we danced on our deck. it was a real par-tay! I will post photos later. Tomorrow is the graduation ceremony.

Major Thomas Griffin

The dinner party hosting Doolittle's Raider, Major Tom Griffin was a rousing success. I rushed home from my work commitment and shook the hand of the guest of honor just as he was leaving. We took the photo below and then he was out the door in less than 5 minutes. I heard the prime rib dinner was delicious and the men of the family reported the time with Major Griffin was amazing and incredible. More than his courage and adventurous stories, the people at the party were most struck by his humility. I knew the evening would be a memorable one... and it was. Imagine... a real war hero right here in my house. What a tremendous honor!
