It's hard to remember a time when hotels didn't use key cards. However, if you're old enough, you'll remember the days when doors to your hotel/motel room were opened with an actual key (usually with your room number on it). Not very secure I must say! Heaven help you if you lost your room key and a person with ill intent found it!
